The government announcement said: “The sale of the crocodiles is meant to minimise these incidents as well as mitigate the impact of crocodile conflicts on communities.” Namibia has paid out around £100,000 in compensation for crocodile attacks in the past four years, including around £70,000 to relatives of people killed by the animals. Yet the rise in animal numbers has seen wild species in conflict with people, particularly in the north east, leading to attacks on humans or their farm animals. Namibia says it has seen a significant recovery in wildlife because of successful conservation efforts. Its announcement said offers indicating the price bid per animal should be posted in sealed envelopes in a box at the ministry headquarters in Windhoek by 4.30pm on July 17. The ministry did not answer questions on who it expected to buy the animals, or how many bids it had already received. The southern African nation’s government has said it wants to re-house 40 of the reptiles from areas where burgeoning crocodile populations mean they are clashing with humans.
